DuPont at Interplastica: Advanced materials plus global development capabilities and customer engagement fuel innovation

Solutions for better performance, lower cost and improved sustainability.

Geneva, December 2015. The DuPont exhibit at Interplastica 2015 reflects the important role plastics play in society and how we, in DuPont, are enhancing our advanced materials technology to help companies innovate and compete in the global economy. Under the banner of “Welcome to the Global Collaboratory™”, we present how our broad portfolio of advanced materials coupled with our Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Predictive Engineering Solutions, can provide outstanding benefits in a wide range of industries, including packaging, automotive, electrical & electronics, and  healthcare.

DuPont Performance Polymers

Science Meets Innovation

DuPont works with customers throughout the product development cycle, continually advancing materials, supporting design and optimising for processing.

At Interplastica, DuPont is emphasising advances in the design stage by helping customers predict how our materials will perform based on enhancements made by DuPont Engineering Research to our materials modelling expertise. “Our State-of-the-art advanced computer modeling and simulation will help original equipment manufacturers confidently select the best material for the application because they will better understand how the material will perform given the dynamics of their particular product,” said Craig Norrey, head of design (EMEA), at DuPont “Our finite element analysis [FEA], models are providing part performance confidence, thus minimising prototyping.”

Lightweighting meets engine efficiency

Among DuPont innovations at Interplastica 2015 will be new forward-thinking materials and technologies to significantly reduce weight in Automotive without compromising performance and sustainability.

DuPont’s collaborative approach goes beyond resins development, providing integrated and cost effective solutions to the challenges of automotive lightweighting and compliance with regional emissions legislation. Good examples of this approach will be seen in rigid and flexible coolant pipes of Glass Reinforced Zytel® PA66 designed for Water Injection Technology (WIT) and DuPont™Zytel® PA612 Long Chain Polyamide (LCPA) that offer excellent processability in extrusion and injection capabilities combined with long-term resistance to aggressive water/glycol and road salts under high pressure at temperatures ranging from -40°C to 125°C.

DuPont offers a wide range of engineering polymers for electrical & electronics that can be recycled Vs thermoset in applications such as housings, enclosures, sockets & switches. In addition, DuPont is also constantly evolving its range of halogen-free engineering polymers, which are being developed to address stringent sustainability legislation for better health and safety.

DuPont has recently launched the first halogen-free1 flame retardant PET Rynite® FR533NH, with ULV0 down to 0,4 mm enabling the design of thin parts for cost-effective production and light weighting. The material is combining enhanced long term heat ageing performance (RTI Mechanical of 155°C at 0,75 mm and 160C as of 1.5 mm under UL746 certification) and good electrical properties with a CTI of 325V(class 2). The resin also brings outstanding flammability benefit, passing GWFI at 960°C and GWIT at 775°C as of 0.75 mm.

1 “halogen-free” as used here indicates that no halogen is added as an intended ingredient.

Reliability meets durability

DuPont™ Pipelon®  is a family of DuPont engineering polymer resins and world class  technology designed to serve the demanding field of polymeric pipe solutions for the oil  and gas industry. The product and technology addresses today’s market needs for improved  permeation resistance to gases such as CO2, H2S and  Hydrocarbons, wider operating temperature range (-40°C - +115°C),  higher pressure, lighter weight, and lower life cycle cost pipe.

Pipelon® is very versatile and can be used in a number of applications such as offshore flexible pipe systems (risers, jumpers, flow lines and umbilicals), down hole for siphon (velocity) and heater strings, CO2 /chemical injection and production tube liners,  and onshore (flow lines, gathering lines and processed water lines) in Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe constructions, advanced multilayer systems and as liners in steel pipe, surface tubulars for gathering and disposal lines and process tubulars for hydrocarbon processing, including steam.

DuPont Packaging and Industrial Polymers

Sustainability Meets Performance in Packaging

DuPont Packaging will highlight joint developments with plastics processors and leading machinery manufacturers – specifically ReifenHauser Keifel and  Kuhne Anlagenbau.  Such collaboration has resulted in a wealth of forward-looking possibilities for saving energy, materials and costs, as well as for reducing the ecological footprint and enhancing the aesthetic appearance of high-performance plastics for multi-functional packaging.

Materials like DuPont™Surlyn® help reduce the environmental footprint and cost of flexible packaging structures without tradeoffs in packaging integrity or appeal. Similarly, DuPont™Appeel® lidding sealant resin is used to improve the convenience of peelable lids and protect the content by ensuring seal integrity.

Polymer Modification Solutions for Specialised Applications

DuPont has unique polymer technology and application development expertise to tailor and enhance properties of conventional polymers for high-value specialised applications. One of the new developments that DuPont will feature in this area is a new series of DuPont™Entira™EP compatibilisers designed for value-adding recycling of difficult to separate mixtures of inherently incompatible polymers. Specific performance demands can be met by selecting specific formulations.

DuPont will also highlight its entire portfolio of industrial polymers for the wire and cable market, to include DuPont™ Fusabond® coupling agents, DuPont™ Elvaloy® ethylene based terpolymers, DuPont™ Elvaloy® AC ethylene acrylates and DuPont™ Elvax® ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) resins. These products are particularly used in halogen-free, flame retardant (HFFR) cable compounds.

DuPont Titanium Technology is providing value for customer

DuPont Titanium Technologies is the largest producer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) products in the world and is investing to significantly increase production capacity of high quality TiO2 products to support growth in all markets we serve, including the strong global plastics market.  At DuPont Titanium Technologies, we strive to improve efficiencies throughout plastics value chains through the industry-leading Ti-Pure® portfolio of products and a suite of cutting-edge technical capabilities.

Ti-Pure® products enable efficient production of down-gauged flexible film structures and creation of attractive packages with shelf-appeal and ‘Pop’.  Ti-Pure® products also protect plastics products from damaging effects of the sun’s harmful UV radiations, enabling the production of long lasting, appealing products.  We attribute our success to maintaining our core values of safety, ethical business relationships, and concern for the environment.  We provide solutions that stretch beyond TiO2 and minerals technology, reaching throughout the value chain to the final consumer.
