Explore Value-Adding Plastics for Cosmetics Packaging

Geneva, June 2015 – DuPont Performance Polymers will highlight its unique portfolio of polyesters, DuPont™ Crastin® PBT  and renewably sourced DuPont™ Sorona® EP PTT, which comply with European cosmetics and food-contact  regulations, at MakeUp in Paris 2015 under the slogan “The Gallery-Design Materials Collection.”

The high-performance plastics, offered as alternatives to current cosmetics packaging solutions, can provide beautiful aesthetics and excellent mechanical properties in contact with cosmetics formulations.  Sorona® EP, which contains 20 percent to 37 percent bio-based ingredients, provides additional sustainability benefits.

Market trends are also driving new material considerations, according to Alexandra Fabbro, EMEA marketing leader for DuPont Performance Polymers cosmetics.  “The industry is driven by the brand houses and the consumer, guided by regulation and shaped by materials.  We are excited by the fact that our materials can help shape a sustainable future.” Alexandra added.

Crastin® offers an excellent surface finish and great dimensional stability. Sorona® EP offers a beautiful surface shine, durability and good dimensional stability. These two products allow design freedom and enable designers to integrate function into durable aesthetics. Both materials comply with the EU Cosmetics Directive (EU nr.1223/2009) as well as the food contact regulations (US: FDA and EU10/2011).

“The additions to the portfolio stimulate new ideas and allow designers and brand houses to develop new creative solutions for packaging in contact with cosmetic formulations,” said Alexandra. “DuPont has a network of 13 global Innovation Centers to help transform concepts to market offerings and we can along the way support their product development especially in terms of materials selection, processing support and testing or validation, which can shorten the development cycle.”

Through the Innovation Centers, collaboration partners can connect with a network of more than 9,500 scientists and engineers across the globe located in over 150 research laboratories and application development centers to find answers to critical challenges the cosmetics industry is facing. This connection between scientists, engineers, designers and top industry experts enables identification of local needs, anticipation of market trends, and the rapid development of innovative solutions.

DuPont’s cosmetics portfolio also includes DuPont™ Surlyn® resins often used for transparent and decorated high-gloss luxury caps, cases, bottles and other cosmetic containers. Our portfolio also boasts beside the well-known Tynex® filaments for nail and mascara, DuPont™ Tynex®Natrafil® filaments  that has the touch and feel of natural bristle and Tynex® Supersoft filaments that has the softest touch for deep facial cleaning applications.”
