BERKELEY COLLEGE PRESENTS THE ARTWORK OF

MATTHEW McDONNELL – PAINTING THE HUMAN FIGURE

Berkeley College is exhibiting the artwork of Matthew McDonnell at its New York City Midtown Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 3 East 43rd Street.  This exhibit is on display from October 1 through 31 – Monday through Friday – from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  An artist’s reception will be held on Thursday, October 11, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, artist Matthew McDonnell spent many of his early years attending summer workshops at the Brooklyn Museum.  He was greatly absorbed by the collections at the museum, in particular the drawings of Michaelangelo.  Painting began earnestly in high school when he moved toward cubism and surrealism, with great interest in Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.  He also studied the work of Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock.  Later, while attending Brooklyn College, he determined that the modern art of our time must be based on the art of cultures around the world and the art of our predecessors. He tries to apply this belief to his work.

Mr. McDonnell calls himself a figurative painter. “My work is always of the figure.  I multiply the figurations and imagery using what is hinted at.  I prefer the suggestion of the possible without delineating the actual.  So it is with the human figure in my paintings.  Whether hidden and veiled, joined or dispersed, it is still there,” he said.

Most of his exhibits have been held in the New York area, including:  Paintcan Studios, Long Island City, NY; The East End Ensemble Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; T. Coll Company, New York, NY; Synergy, New York, NY; and Metropolitan Artists Group, New York, NY.
