Company Calls for Action by Government, Businesse
PARIS, France, and WILMINGTON, Del., February 2, 2007 - DuPont issued the following statement on the latest report by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
from Paris. The statement is attributed to DuPont Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer
Linda Fisher
.
“Climate change is a serious global issue that must be addressed through concerted global action. We believe that the science on climate change is sufficiently strong and the risks serious enough to merit a timely action.
“We have been committed to greenhouse gas reductions in our own operations since 1991. We believe that voluntary measures, while constructive, are not sufficient to address an issue of this magnitude by themselves. The challenge is global and requires broad and coordinated action across all sectors of the economy.
“We think it is time for the federal government to act on climate change legislation, which is why we have joined the United States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) and recommended a responsible framework for this discussion. DuPont is committed to bringing as many voices to the table as possible to motivate U.S. federal climate change policy that is environmentally effective and economically sustainable. The company believes that a well-constructed federal policy that relies on market-based mechanisms will give businesses the regulatory certainty needed to make investment and planning decisions. We think that it is imperative for business to be involved in the policy debate, and that federal legislation that reflects the insights gained from companies that have taken early, responsible action will be useful in helping to shape a sensible policy outcome.”
Background
DuPont has reduced greenhouse gas emissions more than 70 percent since 1991, realizing more than $3 billion in avoided energy costs. Those energy savings are based on the use of improved process controls; optimization of energy generation and distribution at its facilities; new technologies with lower energy consumption, and; one of the biggest factors – improved yields from DuPont’s manufacturing processes. DuPont also is reducing the use of fossil fuels by employing alternative energy sources such as landfill gas.
DuPont – one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 16 years ago – has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research and development investment.
The goals
are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for key global markets, including products based on non-depletable resources, like biofuels.
By 2015, DuPont has committed to:
–Double its research and development investment in environmentally smart market opportunities;
–Double revenues to $8 billion from non-depletable resources;
–Grow annual revenues $2 billion or more from products that create energy-efficiency
and/or reduce greenhouse gas emissions for its customers, and;
–Introduce at least 1,000 new safety products or services
DuPont brings to the market an array of technologies and materials that help its customers and the economy reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company supports policies that recognize the benefits of alternative fuels as one step in a suite of actions necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. It is actively researching and developing advanced, high-performance fuels and other bio-based energy alternatives. These alternatives will expand the fuel options for consumers by introducing new technologies that include advanced biofuels such as
biobutanol
and ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks.
In addition, DuPont manufactures materials for
photovoltaic solar panels
and
fuel cells
and recently launched
DuPont™ Tyvek® AtticWrap™
, the first breathable roofing membrane to completely seal a home’s building envelope. Used in combination with
DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap®
, an airtight building envelope that surrounds the entire home is formed, saving up to 20 percent on energy costs.
