Population Milestone Highlights Increased Need for Global Collaboration; DuPont’s Global Collaboratory and National Geographic Population App Point to Challenges and Solutions

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 31, 2011 – Today, as the world is expected to welcome its 7 billionth inhabitant, DuPont urges other companies, governments and NGOs to work together to find solutions based in science to the significant challenges we face as a consequence of dramatic population growth. At DuPont, we think of this as The Global Collaboratory.

“As never before, our world requires science-powered innovation and collaboration to meet the food, energy and protection challenges of unprecedented population growth,” said Mark P. Vergnano, executive vice president. “Ensuring that no one goes hungry, that we meet our energy needs and that people are safe and our planet renewed requires the public and private sectors to collaborate in new and expanded ways.

“Population growth puts unprecedented demand on our planet and its resources, and is changing the way we live and work. DuPont is focused on providing more and safer food, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and protecting people and the planet,” said Vergnano. “For us, The Global Collaboratory is the spirit of working together to apply science and know-how to make an increasingly crowded world into a place that is better, safer and healthier for everyone.”

The following are just some of the ways DuPont is working to collaborate with partners around the globe to find solutions to these big challenges:

NatGeo Global Population App & Twitter Event

To coincide with the arrival of the world’s 7 billionth person, DuPont has partnered with National Geographic magazine to offer an app that is a collection of its related population coverage across 2011. The app, “7 Billion: How your world will change,” explores the challenges – and potential solutions – for coping with a growing human population in a world of limited resources with informative videos, interactive maps, in-depth articles and stunning photography. It is available for free download for a limited time.

On Nov. 1, National Geographic @NatGeoLive will host a chat on Twitter beginning at 12 p.m. EDT with Robert Kunzig (@rkunzig), author of National Geographic’s The World of 7 Billion.
