Advanced Science Can Help Safeguard China’s Urban Centers

BEIJING, June 3, 2013 – Helping China maintain its rapid pace of urbanization without sacrificing public safety, health and environmental protection, through the use of integrated science, is the focus of a DuPont report published today.  The report, written in collaboration with FORTUNE’s Content Marketing and Strategies Group, as global thought leaders prepare to convene at the FORTUNE Global Forum in Chengdu, outlines China’s four main protection challenges and presents scientific solutions to address them.

The report points out that China’s urban economy could generate more than 90 percent of the country’s economic output by 2025, according to research by the McKinsey Global Institute.  McKinsey also projects that by 2025, 13 of the world’s 25 fastest growing cities will be in mainland China.  The report illustrates that while the rise of China’s urban centers has helped lift the living standards of millions of Chinese, it also is putting significant pressure on the country’s environment.

“China’s urban and economic growth is occurring at a faster rate than ever before,” said DuPont Executive Vice President Mark P. Vergnano.  “We believe that the risks of urban environments can be minimized, and the potential maximized, with the help of science.  DuPont is forging partnerships so that scientific innovation will directly align with local market needs.  We are working to help make efficient and effective investments in safety products and training, while encouraging long-term economic growth.”

According to the report, scientific innovations offer the best hope of addressing China’s four protection challenges – building safe infrastructure, creating safer workplaces, protecting the natural environment and promoting public safety.

“DuPont is ready to do its part, understanding it won’t be easy,” said DuPont Greater China President Tony Su.  “But if the government and the private sector work together, there is ample reason for hope that one of the great economic and social transformations in history can be accomplished with minimal impact on human health, worker safety and the natural environment.”

In China, DuPont has been collaborating with its partners to help China foster its urban and economic growth without sacrificing public health and safety.  For example, consultants from DuPont Sustainable Solutions cooperated with China National Petroleum Corporation managers to lead regular staff safety training sessions with workers.  DuPont currently provides DuPont™ Nomex® insulating paper for China Southern Rail (CSR) to protect the traction transformers on its high-speed locomotives.  Many newer buildings in Chinese cities, such as the Shanghai Tower, now incorporate DuPont™ SentryGlas® interlayers in their construction to strengthen building glasses, which protect against bigger storms, larger impacts and heavier loads.  DuPont supplies BELCO® scrubbers that major Chinese petrochemical refiners, including PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC, use to reduce toxic emissions.  DuPont™ Nomex® and Tyvek® materials are used in safety gear that helps protect Chinese firefighters and medial workers.

DuPont (NYSE: DD) has been bringing world-class science and engineering to the global marketplace in the form of innovative products, materials and services since 1802.  The company believes that by collaborating with customers, governments, NGOs, and thought leaders we can help find solutions to such global challenges as providing enough healthy food for people everywhere, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, and protecting life and the environment.  For additional information about DuPont and its commitment to inclusive innovation, please visit http://www.dupont.com or @杜邦公司 on weibo.com.
