Mecklenburg County Manager and Library CEO appoint committee to study Main Library, fulfill Task Force recommendation

October 20, 2011 – Charlotte, NC – Mecklenburg County Manager Harry L. Jones Sr. and Library CEO Vick Phillips announced today the appointment of the Main Library Committee, a group of seven citizens charged with exploring possibilities for the Main location of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system.

The seven-member group, proposed by the Future of the Library Task Force and jointly appointed by Jones and Phillips, includes:

“We are extremely fortunate to have a group with backgrounds and experiences like this donate their time and energy to this project,” says Phillips. “They bring a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the table.”

“The findings of this group will be of great interest to both the Library and Mecklenburg County,” says Jones. “I think the Future of the Library Task Force made a strong case for why this examination would be helpful for decision-makers.”

The committee was first proposed by the Future of the Library Task Force in Spring 2011. In their report, the Task Force acknowledged that the questions surrounding Main Library are complex, and that “another committee should take a hard look at the Main Library, the functions within the space and usage.” The Task Force added that the committee “would be charged with considering the feasibility of consolidating, downsizing or relocating the functions of Main to ImaginOn, other county-owned sites or other sites in downtown.”

The committee will have its first meeting in mid-November, with their work to be completed in April 2012. Committee meetings will take place monthly in the Dickson Boardroom on the third floor of the Main Library, located at 310 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC  28202.  All meetings will be open to the public, with notice sent out 48 hours in advance.

Information about the committee, its members, and its meetings will be posted online at www.cmlibrary.org/maincommittee.
