Mecklenburg County approves FY13 budget including additional funding to expand hours at regional libraries

Charlotte, NC – June 6, 2012 – Yesterday, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved the final FY2013 budget for Mecklenburg County, including $811,000 in additional funding that will allow the Library to open the six regional libraries on Sundays during the school year, consistent with the recommendations of the Future of the Library Task Force (www.charmeck.org/libraryfuture).

The Library is now making plans to expand hours during the school year from 54 to 58 per week at the larger regional locations: Beatties Ford Road, Independence, Morrison, North County, South County and University City. Hours at Main, ImaginOn, and the smaller community locations will remain at their current levels.

Library officials will present new regional operating hours to the Library Board of Trustees at their June 27 meeting, along with a FY13 operating budget for the Library. The new hours will become effective after Labor Day, beginning Sunday, September 9.

The County’s $811,000 investment will be used to cover the increased operating costs of expanded hours at the regionals, including the addition of staff. The Library will begin posting the new positions in July, with the goal of completing hiring and training by early September.

Library officials credit the Library’s and County’s continued focus on the recommendations of the Task Force for this additional expansion of Library services. They also credit continued support from the City of Charlotte and five towns in Mecklenburg County, the contributions of donors and volunteers, the advocacy of individuals and community groups such as the Friends of the Library, and the efforts of many others in reinforcing with the BOCC the desire of citizens for restoration of Library services.

Last year, the Library expanded hours from 37 to 54 per week at regionals after Labor Day, thanks to $2 million in additional funding from Mecklenburg County for FY12. Prior to the recession, regional libraries were open 76 hours per week.
