FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Library announces special hours on March 21 as part of national “EveryoneOn” campaign to promote digital literacy

Charlotte, NC – Monday, March 3, 2013 – On Thursday, March 21, the Library will join other community partners in a national campaign called “EveryoneOn” to help more people learn digital technology skills to improve their lives. The library will be open according to the following special, one-day schedule:

Digital literacy is the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies. As the largest provider of free computer and Internet access in Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library supports the development of digital literacy skills to improve the education, quality of life and economic health of Mecklenburg County residents.

On March 21, in addition to the basic library services offered every day, all Charlotte Mecklenburg Library locations will offer programs and activities that support digital literacy, plus $5 fine waivers. These activities will include one-on-one technology help, exploring the Library’s resources, instructional video clips and library card sign-up. More information can be found on the Library’s website, www.cmlibrary.org/everyoneon.

Charlotte was chosen as one of five EveryoneOn” launch cities alongside Philadelphia, LA, Chicago and Macon, Georgia. EveryoneOn is a national public awareness campaign by Connect2Compete, a national nonprofit supported by the Knight Foundation. Connect2Compete aims to raise awareness of free digital literacy training and Internet access opportunities throughout the US. They recognize that public libraries, and other community organizations, play a critical role in helping bridge the digital divide.

“In today’s world, people need digital skills, affordable access to the Internet and to computing equipment to realize their full potential,” said Susan Patterson, program director of Knight Foundation.
