Smarter thinking. From Honda. GOOD MORNING, NEW YORK CITY. YOU NEED A TRIP OR VACATION, DON'T YOU? 44 DEGREES, FEELS LIKE 33 WHEN THE WIND BLOWS OUT THERE. DEFINITELY WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT ON TWC SOCIAL. WHY AM I SEEING MY BREATH RIGHT NOW? IT'S GOING TO GET THERE. MAYBE JUNISH? THE WEIGHT OF THE HEAVYWEIGHT SNOW HAS TREE BRANCHES SAGGING IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE WELTONS IN LAUGHLIN TOWNSHIP WEREN'T GOING TO LET IT SNAP THE BRANCHES OF THEIR CHERRY TREE, THOUGH. THIS IS A SMART IDEA. THIS IS A SCENE REPEATED IN MANY SPOTS ACROSS PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW YORK. DEFINITELY. SAVE THE TREES, RIGHT? LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON TODAY. TEMPERATURES ON THE ON COOL SIDE. NOT LOOKING AT A LOT OF SPOTS BELOW FREEZING THAT WILL HELP OUT WITH THE TREES. 36 DEGREES IN BUFFALO. 41 IN NEW YORK CITY VERY CHILLY. AND HERE IS OUR HIGHS. WE FORGET I THINK WHAT OUR AVERAGES SHOULD BE THIS TIME YEAR, WE SEEM TO SWING SO FAR ON EITHER SIDE OF AVERAGE. 43 IN BUFFALO. 54 TOMORROW IN THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE PULLS OUT FINALLY FROM THE NORTHEAST. HOWEVER, THE NEXT SYSTEM COMING IN IS NOT REALLY GOING TO HELP US OUT THAT MUCH. TEMPERATURES REMAIN BELOW AVERAGE. WARM UP IN THE MIDWEST. MINNEAPOLIS. ONCE THIS THING PULLS THROUGH. CLIPPERS MOVE THROUGH QUICKLY AND BRING LIGHT PRECIPITATION AND BRING IN A TEMPERATURE CHANGE ON THE COOL SIDE. MINNEAPOLIS, BY THE TIME WE GET TO THURSDAY, 56 DEGREES. PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT HAS DECLARED A DISASTER EMERGENCY AFTER HEAVY SNOW CRIPPLED THE AREA. IT HAS CRIPPLED THE SCHOOLS AND LEFT THOUSANDS WITHOUT POWER. FOR THE LATEST, LET'S TURN TO GOVERNOR CORBETT. THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME OUT WITH US THIS MORNING. WHAT ACTIONS HAVE BEEN ENFORCED TO HELP THE RESIDENTS OF PENNSYLVANIA? THE RESIDENTS HAVE REACTED VERY WELL. WITH THE SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARATION, WE WERE ABLE TO PREPOSITION EQUIPMENT, PREPOSITION NATURAL GUARDSMEN, IF THEY WERE NEEDED, AND THANKFULLY, THIS EVENT DID NOT TURN OUT AS BAD AS MANY PEOPLE WERE PREDICTING AND THAT'S GOOD FOR THE ENTIRE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA AND AS YOU KNOW, WE HAD THE RAIN EVENT IN THE EAST, SNOW EVENT IN CENTRAL AND WESTERN MOUNTAINS. OUR ELECTRICITY USERS, OVER DOWN TO JUST OVER 4,000 PEOPLE OUT OF ELECTRICITY AS THE LAST REPORT I RECEIVED AT 6:00 THIS MORNING. AND WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE DO? WHO SHOULD THEY CONTACT IF THEY DO NEED ASSISTANCE? WELL, THEY SHOULD CONTACT THEIR LOCAL MANAGEMENT EMERGENCY IN THE COUNTY, MORE OF A COUNTY-RUN ORGANIZATION. THE STATE SUPPORTS THE COUNTY, SO IT'S IMPORTANT THEY CAN CALL THEIR COUNTY SYSTEMS. MANY AREAS IN PENNSYLVANIA, THAT WERE HIT, THESE PEOPLE WERE USED TO SIGNIFICANT SNOWS, IF YOU LOOK AT WHERE THE LAUREL SUMMIT IS, THEY LIKE THE SNOW THERE, UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAD A BAD SNOW SEASON THERE THIS YEAR FOR SKIING AND I THINK SEVEN SPRINGS ACTUALLY OPEN. WHAT'S INTERESTING FOR US, TODAY IS OUR PRIMARY ELECTION DAY AND WE'RE MONITORING HOW THE PEOPLE ARE GETTING TO THE POLLS, THE COUNTIES ARE ON TOP OF IT AS TO MAKING SURE THAT ELECTRICITY IS PROVIDED TO THE VARIOUS POLLING PLACES ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH. GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT IN PENNSYLVANIA, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME THIS MORNING, APPRECIATE YOUR PERSPECTIVE. COMING UP ON 14 MINUTES PAST THE HOUR. HERE IS JEN WITH A LOOK AT HEADLINES. LOOK AT THAT. ANOTHER AMAZING SIGHT. IF THE WEATHER COOPERATES, NASA WILL MOVE THE SHUTTLE "EN ON WEDNESDAY. The forecast from this morning looks on track, with upper 70s today. There is a very small chance of a storm very late tonight, but most will stay dry. Temperatures will be considerably warmer than recent morning with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. The only question mark for Wednesday is "how warm will get? " A strong south breeze should boost highs well into the 80s, with some records possible. Springfield s record is only 85, well within reach. A cold front will settle into the region on Thursday but a lid of warm air will prevent much in the way of rain except for areas north of the front. This means a difference in highs as well, but I think we ll be in the 80s again. Widely scattered storms will continue to be possible north of the front through Friday with areas south of it staying warm. Cooler air will arrive for the weekend. Staff Writer

BENNINGTON -- Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has tapped a local resident to serve on the Vermont Economic Progress Council to fill the remainder of a vacated term.

Michael Keane, a resident of North Bennington, was selected by Shumlin. Keane is the co-founder and managing director of Fundamental Shift, LLC, and the regional managing director of Fiduciary Plan Governance, LLC. Keane will serve out the remainder of a term that ends next March, and could be re-appointed for a subsequent term.

"Michael Keane brings unique strengths and extensive financial experience to the VEPC Board and he has served his community and the state in many capacities, including the Bennington Economic Development Task Force, Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce, Better Bennington Corporation and the United Way," Shumlin said in statement. "I am very pleased to appoint him to this important position."

VEPC Chairman Stephan Morse said Keane is a good fit for the council because he is a business owner and has significant management, business and marketing experience. Keane has worked for several firms including A.T. Kearney, Andersen Business Consulting, American Management Systems Inc. and KPMG. He also holds graduate degrees from Duke University and the University of Oslo and various certifications and accreditation.

"We're delighted when fellow citizens with such experience and knowledge

are willing to give back to their community," Morse said. "Michael's financial, business, and management background will be especially helpful in our efforts to promote quality jobs for Vermonters."

"I'm very excited and honored to be asked to help serve the people of Vermont in this fashion," Keane said. "As a business consultant, I have always recognized the importance of economic development and job creation for healthy communities, and will continue to do so in my new role."

Keane has led a committee focused on employer retention and recruitment as a member of the Bennington Economic Development Task Force. Working at the state level will help local efforts, Keane said.

"I see this as only adding to that. Neither one of these should be a distraction to the other," he said. "I'm honored and I'm excited to start to have an impact for Bennington and for the area."

VEPC is an independent board made up of 11 Vermont residents that are appointed by the governor and the General Assembly. The council, which is responsible for reviewing and approving economic development incentives, is part of the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development.

Keane said he will travel to Montpelier today for orientation meetings and begin participating in the council's meetings later this week.

"I'm going to be a good student the first meeting or two and then I hope to be able to add value after that," he said.

The best places to see all the action are from the volunteers' front row seats, at water tables, as road marshals along the route, and as part of the start/finish staff.

For a runner, a point-to-point race is an adventure. The course has no laps or doglegs, and no section is revisited. Instead, it unfolds ahead, into the unknown with every step, offering the excitement of exploration and a road back in time through some of Vermont's oldest villages.

Last year's inaugural event--southern Vermont's first full-length marathon--attracted over 300 runners and hand-cyclists.

The race earned consistently high marks from participants for its scenic course, smooth organization and enthusiastic volunteers.

New this year is post-race shuttle bus service back to the start for runners who prefer to leave their cars in Bennington. Runners also can park at the finish and take a pre-race shuttle in the morning.

Riding Vacations

By Juli S. Thorson and Julie Preble

Ready to turn a vacation dream into a dream vacation? Get started here by sampling five kinds of horseback getaways, then let the planning begin!

After riding the high country at Colorado's Vista Verde Guest Ranch, you can enjoy a gourmet meal with fellow guests, then relax in your luxurious private cabin.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend vacation time at a luxury guest ranch in the Rockies? Or, do your vacation dreams run more toward roughing it, packing into the wilderness? What about the chance to stay at a romantic inn, with the option to bring your own horse? Would you rather help drive a horse herd, camping out along the trail? Are you someone who insists that “vacation” and “winter warmth” must go together?

We're here to help you try out such choices. From experience (yes, we do go on riding vacations ourselves), we know that while there's a horseback getaway for just about anyone, not all experiences are right for every rider. So here's a rundown of what to expect from five riding vacations, each one representative of a popular kind. You're sure to be inspired one way or another, and can take further planning from there.

Western Luxury

Vacation type: Spend a week at a luxury guest ranch, out in the American West.

The allure: You get to experience the West and its grand open spaces and be pampered while you're at it. Expect fine accommodations, gourmet meals, the option of spa treatments, and attention paid to your every need. In the luxury guest-ranch vacation genre, you'll usually find other activities besides horseback riding, giving non-riding family members something fun to do, too.

Sample venue: Vista Verde Guest Ranch, near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. (800) 526-7433; vistaverde.com.

What you'll find: Vista Verde is a family-owned ranch headquartered in a small valley about half an hour from the ski-resort town of Steamboat Springs. You're truly in the Rockies here (elevation 7,800 feet), with beautiful aspens and granite peaks, plus a front-row seat to some of Mother Nature's best atmospheric shows. The ranch's main lodge, guest quarters, and outbuildings are of log and timber-frame construction, adding to the iconic, classic-Colorado appeal. With a 40-guest capacity, the ranch maintains a one-to-one ratio of staff member to guess, meaning you never lack for attention and hospitality service.

What's special: Vista Verde is home to a performance-horse breeding and training program that's led by pro trainer and reiner Terry Wegener. Wegener also does on-site horsemanship clinics for Vista Verde guests, and supervises the training of its guest horses. Advanced riders will find themselves just as well mounted as beginners or those new to mountain riding.

How and what you'll ride: In a typical week's program, you'll begin with arena riding for orientation, then explore trails, maybe even round up cattle. You can test your skills in arena competitions, too. You'll be assigned a horse and gear that'll be yours for the week, but a staff member will saddle/unsaddle your horse each time you ride, and otherwise take care of it. On trail rides, you'll go out in groups of just two or three, with your own assigned guide.

Where you'll stay: Some guests choose to stay in the main lodge, for convenient use of the dining hall and great room. But you also get the option of a cabin elsewhere on the grounds, and these are like no other cabins you're likely to have seen. They're two-story, with granite countertops, luxurious linens, and other high-end amenities. Your cabin (or lodge room) is perpetually restocked with complimentary beverages and snacks. Your bed gets remade while you're out riding, and at the end of each day, you're treated to turndown service and a chance to use the private spa-tub on your deck.

Other particulars: Vista Verde guests can take lessons in fly fishing and rock climbing, or ride mountain bikes if they like. The ranch has a swimming pool, its own pond stocked with trout, and summertime activities created especially for kids. Guest rooms have no TVs, but Internet service is available in the main lodge. The ranch is known for the tantalizing meals created by its chef and produced three times a day from the lodge's kitchen.

Great memory: The weekly steak-fry on the trail, with a moonlight ride back to the ranch, is among the stand-out rides.

Cost: $2,900 to $3,500 per person for the week, depending on dates and lodging type chosen.

Set in the heart of central Vermont, the Mountain Top Inn and resort is an end-of-road destination that gives you the option of bringing your own horse.

Classic New England

Vacation type: Stay at and ride from a quintessential New England inn and resort.

The allure: With its long ties to American history, mixed forests of deciduous and evergreen trees, and centuries-old innkeeping tradition, there's no other place quite like northern New England. Its inns, resorts, lodges, and grand camps helped define “vacations” as first known in this country. Add horseback riding, and the resulting vacation picture is one Normal Rockwell could have painted.

Sample venue: Mountain Top Inn and Resort, Chittenden, Vermont. (800) 483-2311; activetravelinc.com.

What you'll find: Here's that romantic Vermont inn you might envision from book or screen—it's no surprise that the Norman Rockwell Museum of Vermont isn't far away. Every guest room has a bucolic view, and the lodge's great-room fireplace is lit every afternoon, year-round, at teatime. You're tended by a warm and welcoming staff, most of whom have worked here for years. The inn's lodge, chalets, equestrian center, and riding trails are in the Green Mountain National Forest, and the lodge itself overlooks a peaceful lake.

What's special: Though excellent guest horses are provided, at no additional fee to guests, you also have the option of bringing your own horse if you wish—also at no additional fee. Your horse gets a private paddock. The inn's own horses include a team of Percherons used for pulling wagons and sleighs. If you wish, you can get lessons in how to drive horses, at the lines of this team.

How and what you'll ride: Riding activities are tailored to guests' interests, abilities, and preferred style of riding (Western or English). You can ride on the cross-country field near the lodge, take lessons in jumping or other disciplines, and/or explore logging-type roads and wooded trails. If you'd like to bring a casual rider with you—a significant other, let's say, or a friend who hasn't ridden much—you can do so here, as the range of guest horses accommodates riders of all levels.

Where you'll stay: Some guests stay at the inn's main lodge, with some 40 rooms, while others are housed in one of the nearby chalets. These range in size and the number of guests they'll accommodate.

Other particulars: Though well off the beaten track, the Mountain Top Inn and Resort is readily accessible from all major cities in the Northeast, and just an hour from the airport at Vermont's largest city, Burlington.

Great memory: If you book your riding vacation for autumn, you'll be treated to New England fall colors at their glorious peak.

Cost: $1,100 per person, four-night stay.

SummerFun a ringer for the weekend | Attachment

Newberry Observer - Online

Senior Reporter

Horseshoe pitchers from 10 states will converge on Newberry Saturday and Sunday for the annual SummerFun Horseshoe Tournament.

The tournament is normally played over the Memorial Day weekend but due to conflicts it was moved to this weekend.

This will be the first stop on the Horseshoe Pitchers Pro Tour and will feature several of the top 10 pitchers in the world including the Division I 40-foot World Champion Brian Simmons of Bristol, Vt.

Simmons shot the first ever perfect game in Newberry in 2009, said Newberry Parks, Recreation and Tourism Event Coordinator Brian Bedenbaugh.

In addition to the competition between pitchers from Georgia to Vermont, the tournament will also have music, food from Sonic, kids inflatables and a classic car cruise in from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Then around 1 p.m. Simmons and radio personality Kent “Kix” Layton will have an exhibition game.

The matches will run on Saturday from 10 a.m. to around 12:30 p.m and 5 to 8:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event will be held at Marion Davis Park off Kendall Road near the Oakland Mill community.

The SummerFun Horseshoe Tournament is free to the community and food can be purchased at the event.

The event is sponsored by the City of Newberry Parks Recreation and Tourism Department.

ice cream, chocolate, and cheese we’re pretty convinced that Vermont is the foodie tour capital of the world. However, that didn’t stop us from checking out one more place. This was especially the case because we needed something sudsy to wash down all the other snacks and samples. That’s why we loaded up our phone with directions to see the secrets and scenes at the Magic Hat Brewery in South Burlington. We waited until the afternoon to visit—like at a couple minutes past noon—because we wanted to appear somewhat responsible.

The Magic Hat Artifactory is made up of a crazy trippy gift shop, a psychedelic bar, and snazzy factory. In total it added up to one of the best breweries we’ve seen, and it was surprising to see such a place just a few minutes off the city’s commercial strip.

Tours are held about every hour or so during the afternoons on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but don’t worry if your visit doesn’t align with a free tour.

There’s a pretty decent self-guided tour where you can check out pretty much everyone else sees on the guided tour. A short couple of videos explain the history of the brewery as well as how they give back to the community. You’ll continue to make your way through black-light filled hallways while checking out beers and promos from the past before making your way up to the factory.

Huge windows show off the brewery process, and funny and colorful signs explain what each station and machine is responsible for.

We were especially fond to see the “Stupendous Sticker Licker” in action. There were plenty of ales, stouts, and lagers all wrapped up warm and snug ready for shipment, and of course there was a pretty decent aroma of yeast and malt filling the air.

Once done with the tour you’re free to imbibe your share of free samples. We think we were allowed to have four each, and with eight different beers on tap that was plenty for a couple of us to share. The company’s favorite #9 was available, along with a few brewery only options like Juniper Rye and Single Chair. There were even some pretzels to help you cleanse your palette—or just munch on—between samples. The bartenders were super friendly and easy going—a welcome surprise—as we usually find the brewery tour folks less than friendly.

Visiting is totally free, but that’s only if you can resist the mountains of memorabilia that’s available for sale.

There’s shirts, stuff for your dog, glasses, posters, signs, growlers, and even Frisbees. The stuff here is pretty nifty, but it’s also pretty pricey. Shirts are not quite as expensive as those offered at a concert, but let's just say one shirt was at least the equivalent of a couple 12-packs. All in all it’s nice to pickup a little something to commemorate your visit, but we’d recommend skipping the clothing in favor of some to-go beer. We’ll definitely be taking our own advice the next time we find ourselves in the area.

UPDATE 1-Winter punches back with snow, heavy rain in Northeast US | Attachment
04/25/2012
Chicago Tribune Collections

* Snow could knock out electrical power

* Travel delays also possible

(Adds updated forecasts)

April 22 (Reuters) - Wintry weather was set to make a

comeback with as much as a foot (30 cm) or more of snow on the

way in the northeastern United States on Sunday, while other

parts of New England faced the threat of flooding.

After a relatively mild winter, winter storm warnings were

in effect in parts of Pennsylvania and New York for Sunday night

through Wednesday. Heavy snow was expected to start falling late

Sunday with up to 14 inches (35.6 cm) possible, potentially

causing downed trees and power outages, according to the

National Weather Service.

"In the Northeast, the year without a winter began with a

freak snowstorm in late October and it seems it will end with

one during the second half of April," AccuWeather forecaster

Alex Sosnowski said.

He referred to a deadly storm in late October that caused 2

million people to lose power and caused emergencies to be

declared from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.

Snow also was expected to blanket parts of western New York

and the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia starting late

Sunday. Up to 12 inches (30 cm) were possible at some of the

highest elevations.

Forecasters said that recent rains have caused the trees to

replace leaves lost in winter, which could cause them to be

heavier and more prone to breaking if snow accumulates.

"In some places, the power will be out for days," said

AccuWeather.com forecaster Henry Margusity, referring to the

mountain regions of in those states.

The snowfall was predicted to dust parts of the Smoky

Mountains in east Tennessee, as well as some light snow in

southwest Virginia. Snow was expected to start moving into

northeast Ohio early Monday.

By Sunday afternoon, forecasters had extended their winter

warnings and advisories up to the Adirondacks and in the Niagara

Falls area in northern New York.

The warnings come as forecasters expect an intense

Nor'easter storm to move up the coast on Sunday, spurred by a

deep low pressure system along the Atlantic coast and bringing

with it winds up to 50 miles per hour (80 kph)as well as

expected travel delays on Monday.

A flood watch is in effect for parts of western Maine, New

Hampshire, northwestern Connecticut, southern Vermont, and Rhode

Island. Up to four inches of rain was expected in some areas,

according to the National Weather Service.

The flood watch for those areas remained in effect through

Monday morning. Watches for parts of southern New York and New

Jersey were on through at least Sunday night.

The wet weather is expected to be the worst between Virginia

and New York City Sunday evening, including Washington, D.C.,

with the rest of New England getting doused with rain early on

Monday morning, according to forecasters on Accuweather.com.

Rudyard Kipling | Attachment
04/24/2012
DAILY KOS

Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.

Greetings Kossacks. For this Installment of Favorite authors - we turn to another Edwardian era Englishman, much praised, somewhat maligned but who wrote fabulously, got a Nobel prize, and had the amazing ability to write brilliantly in novels, short stories, children's stories, travelogues, and poetry. He was a newspaperman for awhile, and I would bet he wrote some interesting newspaper articles. In part because he had the material to do so.

I refer of course to Joseph Rudyard Kipling, the most eloquent articulator of the British empire and with it all that was good, and all that was patronizingly bad.

Let's 'ave a look, shall we?

Joseph Rudyard Kipling could well be described as a true child of Empire; He was born in Mumbai in British India and traveled extensively over many of the empire's component parts; he also lived for awhile in Vermont of all places and at least for several years was quite happy there. One of the things he did was write travel books detailing where he had been;obviously they are now a bit dated, but bear perusing as examples of how to describe a setting perfectly; brisk pacing, avoidance of cliche, drawing the logical but not necessarily the obvious conclusion.

Here is a bit of verse Kipling wrote about his birth:

Mother of Cities to me,

For I was born in her gate,

Between the palms and the sea,

Where the world-end steamers wait.

One could spend a lot of time and space decribing his novels such as Kim, Captains Courageous and The Jungle Book. One could write a lot about his verse; even T.S. Eliot, who was not exactly a lover of either jingles or empire offered qualified praise. After all, who has not been inspired, even secretly by If cliched though it might be now:

IF you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise etc. How many graduation cards has that verse spawned? And think about it, how easy it is to memorize, at least the first few lines. It sticks, which generally mean it was written exactly right. Perhaps you could even boil "The Fountainhead" down to those verses and save yourself a lot of time.

Nevertheless the example I would give of Kipling here - and the reason I am writing this on a very 21st century site such as DKos, which would regard Western imperialism as quaint at best. . .and some of our younger contributors might even need to have it explained to them, or at any rate have to look it up in wikipedia . . . is because of his short collection of tales that I read in elementary school and never forgot.

I refer of course to his 'Just So Stories'. (Get the pun of the title now?); a group of tales that explain in childlike terms how things as they are came to be. They are children's literature at its best, and I must admit I am starting to read them to my daughter now just for the pleasure of reading them again. In fact, they are very much fun to read aloud, almost more so then reading them to oneself, because of the cadence of the words.

Take the sound from "The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo:

Not always was the kangaroo as now we do behold him, but a different animal with four short legs. He was grey and he was wooly and his pride was inordinate: he danced on an outcrop in the middle of Australia, and he went to the Little God Nqa.

He went to Nqa at six before breakfast, saying 'Make me different from all other animals by five this afternoon'

Up jumped Nqa from his seat in the sand-flat and shouted 'Go away'

He was grey and he was wooly and his pride was inordinate: he danced on a rock-ledge in the middle of Australia, and he went to the Middle God Nquing.

He went to Nquing at eight after breakfast, saying 'Make me different from all other animals; make me, also, wonderfully popular by five this afternoon'

Up jumped Nquing from his burrow in the spinifex and shouted 'Go away'

He was grey and he was wooly and his pride was inordinate: he danced on a sandback in the middle of Australia, and he went to the Big God Nquong.

He went to Nquong at ten before dinner-time, saying 'Make me different from all other animals; make me popular and wonderfuly run after by five this afternoon'

Up jumped Nquong from his bath in the salt-pan and shouted 'Yes I will' Take my word for it, it is a lot of fun to read that to a child.

Or take what I read first, a story of how the elephant got his trunk, "The Elephant's Child":

In the High and Far-Off Times the Elephant, O Best Beloved, had no trunk. He had only a blackish, bulgy nose, as big as a boot, that he could wiggle about from side to side; but he couldn't pick things up with it. But there was one elephant - a new elephant - an elephant's child - who was full of 'satiable curtiosity, and that means he asked ever so many questions. Therein follows what has to be one of the funniest short stories of all time, let alone one of the best children's short stories ever written. He gets spanked, you see, by all his relatives, who are various African wildlife, when he dares ask the question "What does the Crocodile have for dinner". In fact he gets spanked whenever he asks a whole bunch of the sort of questions that children ask all the time. So he goes on his own journey to find the answer to that question, to the 'Great grey-green greasy Limpopo river, all set about with fever trees' to find out. And the Crocodile bites his nose, and the elephants child tries to pull away and the nose gets stretched, and, well, the rest becomes clear. By the way, I was greatly pleased to find out later that there really is a Limpopo river (it is the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa) and is in fact infected with Crocodiles. I also think that as a child I really liked the ending in which Elephant's child, because of his new nose, now gets to be the one who does the spanking.

The other stories in the collection are written in the same droll tone and are all great and onomatopoeic in the same way. You can laugh at the way the Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog and the Slow-Solid Tortoise outwit the slow-witted Painted Jaguar who comes to eat them, eventually learning to both curl up and swim and becoming armadillos. You can itch right along with the ill-mannered Rhinoceros, who gets his comeuppance after stealing a Parsee-man's cake, and as a consequence gets itchy crumbs forever placed in his hide. Any cat lover will absolutely recognize the attitude of the average cat, particularly to dogs, babies, and husbands in the household in "The Cat that Walked Alone". There is a funny type of Oriental creation-myth in "the Crab that Played with the Sea". And, if you can get beyond some very typical Edwardian era benign-colonial racism - and particularly if you interpret it in the context of more enlightened 21st century looking at the nineteenth, sort of like Huck Finn - there is "How the Leopard got his Spots", o best beloved. And one-two-three-Where's-Your-Breakfast.

Now obviously these are fables and not even children believe them literally, at least not when they get old enough to really understand the stories. But that isn't where their truth lies. Aside from the droll perfectly cadenced writing, I think they reveal a real truth about how people are: We make sense of the world by stories. We use narrative all the time; this can be both good or bad, based on how true those stories are (see the narrative that President Obama is a Kenyan socialist who somehow usurped the Presidency). This is a basic human trait not peculiar to children, or even the childish. It is why the best told stories stay with us. It is thus very cute to see a neolithic girl play about with her daddy and cause a bit of fuss when she draws a picture that doesn't come out quite right to a foreign tribesman who cannot speak the language of the tribe, and so later on is inspired to create the first alphabet. And, by the way, as the father of a rather willful daughter I can absolutely attest to the fact that they would much rather draw pictures and play about with their daddies as opposed to concentrating on their lessons.

Which gets me to the point where I have to close with a down note here, one that will just give enough of a poignancy to these droll little tales - and maybe explain a bit of why they are as powerful as they are - by noting that Kipling's daughter, Josephine, for whom these tales were started as bedtime stories the author made up, maybe, died of pneumonia before these tales came out. So in the end, O best beloved, they are his elegy to his daughter, the one who probably asked,'Daddy, why does the elephant have such a long trunk?'

Or, to put it in verse:

I KEEP six honest serving-men

(They taught me all I knew);

Their names are What and Why and When

And How and Where and Who.

I send them over land and sea,

I send them east and west;

But after they have worked for me,

I give them all a rest.

I let them rest from nine till five,

For I am busy then,

As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,

For they are hungry men.

But different folk have different views;

I know a person small—

She keeps ten million serving-men,

Who get no rest at all!

She sends'em abroad on her own affairs,

From the second she opens her eyes—

One million Hows, two million Wheres,

And seven million Whys!
