DuPont Teijin Films win Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2011

DuPont Teijin Films UK Ltd, leading supplier of polyester films, is delighted to announce that they have been honoured by the grant of a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2011. The award has been granted for the development of an innovative range of high performance Melinex® polyester films for solar photovoltaic modules.

Dr Colin Mackenzie, site manager of the DuPont Teijin Films UK Ltd Drungans site, said “The film products made at our plant in Dumfries are used for hundreds of different applications, from identity cards to diabetes test strips to food packaging. One of our latest developments is a range of highly innovative products for solar photovoltaic modules (solar cells). We are very proud of our role in developing production processes for these films. Our business relies on making innovative new products and these have contributed greatly towards achieving a record of over £100 million of exports from the site in 2010”.

Dr Moray Mackenzie, General Manager of the DuPont Teijin Films Differentiated Business, commented “Photovoltaic energy is generated when the sunlight is converted directly into electricity by modules that are usually fitted to south facing roofs. While there are not many solar modules installed on rooftops in South West Scotland so far, other countries in Europe such as Germany have been embracing this technology. Our new film products are used to provide long life and light weight electrical insulation for these modules. Although this may sound simple, it has required step-out polymer and manufacturing technology to turn innovative ideas into reality. We would particularly like to thank Scottish Enterprise for their support via a grant towards product and process development activities at Dumfries”.

Manufacture of these products is focused at DuPont Teijin Films’ production site in Dumfries, Scotland with commercial development and R&D undertaken at DuPont Teijin Films’ Global Technology Centre based at Wilton in North East England.

The Queen’s Award is made to a number of companies each year but few achieve the rare honour of winning multiple awards within a short period of time.  However, this is the third Queen’s Award for Enterprise that DuPont Teijin Films has won since 2003.  The company’s achievement has been judged by a thorough and demanding process and winning this award places DuPont Teijin Films amongst the best in the UK.
