GAS PRICES TO REMAIN STABLE THIS WEEK

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2010)—Retail gas prices are expected to remain relatively unchanged this week after the price of crude oil closed slightly lower than last week. Crude oil settled Friday at $87.79 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, $1.40 less than last week.

China’s move to curb inflation and slow demand growth in the country was the driving factor that pushed the price of crude oil lower last week. Economists expect oil prices to decrease further this week on speculation China will raise interest rates.

“Gas prices will remain stable this week with minimal fluctuation,” said Jessica Brady, manager, AAA Public Relations. “Although consumers are seeing $3 or close to $3 a gallon prices in many areas, we don’t expect prices to increase further. If anything, prices may decrease by a cent or two. While that may not be much of a decrease, any drop in price is welcomed by already strapped consumers.”

The national average price of unleaded regular gasoline is $2.97 per gallon, up 4 cents from last week. Florida’s average price of $2.99 reflects a 5-cent increase from last week. Tennessee’s average price of $2.83 reflects an increase of 3 cents and Georgia’s average price of $2.87 reflects a 4-cent increase from last week, respectively.
