AAA: HALF OF CONSUMERS WILL USE CREDIT CARD REWARD POINTS TO SAVE ON HOLIDAY SHOPPING

Credit Cards are the Number One Payment Method for Holiday Shopping, Shows AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 4, 2012) — Credit cards are the most prevalent form of payment for holiday shopping (43%) among Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee residents.  A growing number of survey respondents (50% vs. 42% in 2011) ranked points/rewards/miles as the number one factor in determining which credit card to use for purchases, even if it means using a card with a higher interest rate. Nearly four in 10 reward card holders (38%) said they will use reward points to save on holiday shopping, with over two in five (42%) using the points to purchase merchandise for others and 32 percent using the points for cash back. Consumers who say they will use the rewards to buy merchandise for themselves nearly doubled from last year (30% in 2012 vs. 16% in 2011).

“Rewards continue to be the major draw for people deciding whether to use a credit card to purchase gifts this holiday season,” said Jill Perry, AAA Financial Services, The Auto Club Group. “However, reward promotions frequently change so it’s wise to review the fine print before redeeming points for holiday shopping.”
